German Twisted Cast On
This tutorial shows how to work the German Twisted Cast On, which is a nice-looking, regular cast on and is great when you want a very stretchy edge: perfect for sock cuffs, hat brims, baby/kid sweater necklines… Also looks great when working in garter stitch.
If you already know the long tail cast on, this variation is easy to learn.
DIRECTIONS:
Make a slip knot and place it on your right needle (or just lay the yarn on top of your needle). Your yarn ball is away from you, and the (long) yarn tail is towards you.
Put your left thumb and index finger in the sling shot position, holding both yarn strands in your left hand.
Swing your right needle toward you and go under the two front yarn strands (held by your thumb) then over and down inside the loop.
With your right needle emerging from the loop toward you, reach over toward the back yarn strand (held by your index finger) and, grabbing it with your needle tip, bring it toward you.
Insert your needle tip upwards in the tiny gap just right of the twist, let go of the yarn loop on your thumb, and tighten the newly-formed stitch.
